According to ISO14001's 3.5 definition: an environmental management system is an integral part of an organization's overall management system, which includes the organizational structure, planning activities, organizational responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources required to develop, implement, achieve, review and maintain an environmental policy. It also includes management aspects such as the organization's environmental policy, objectives and indicators.

An environmental management system can be described as follows: it is a planned and coordinated management activity of an organization, which has standardized action procedures and documented control mechanisms. It is implemented through an organizational structure with clear responsibilities and obligations, aimed at preventing adverse effects on the environment.
